4 Ways to Make 2018 a More Magical Year

01 January 2018
The start of a new year is a great time to realign your focus. Let's work to reclaim the wonder and excitement of some of our earlier years. Here are 4 things you can do to help make 2018 a more magical year.
I assume it's relatively safe to say that on January 1 of any given year we are all the queens and kings of new beginnings. This is one of those times of year where we are all trying to improve in some area of our lives, but very few of us stay on that train for very long.

According to Business Insider, "80% of resolutions fail by the second week of February." That article provided tips for attempting to keep your resolutions, if you so choose to continue down that path. This year I'm trying out something a little different. Instead of setting goals or picking a single word I'm working on creating an overall feeling for 2018.

In 5 years, when you look back on 2018, what feeling do you want to have?
I want to look back and feel like this was a magical year. This is the final year of my twenties. It's time to just be the person I have wanted to be.  Fake it 'til you make it, amirite?

In an attempt to make this a year that feels magical I'm going to channel my inner, night before any major holiday as a 6-year-old, child. In addition I am hoping to change up my mindset in following ways:

1| Find Words to Live By:

Mantras, scriptures, passages, adjectives you wish people would use to describe you, or even an entire book like one of my favorites Change Your Life in 30 Days by Rhonda Britten. The main point is that these words can, if you really believe them and apply them, become part of who you are.

When something is repeated enough times you start to believe it, so you might as well make it something good.

My words for 2019 are obviously going to be along the lines of, "thirty, flirty, and thriving," but for 2018 I'm going to be playing "I am enough" on a loop.

2| Live in This Moment:

I am the worst at this. As hard as I may try to avoid it, I find myself on various forms of social media throughout the day. Sometimes it seems like the rest of the world is having a great time, all the time.

Talk about discouraging! You know what though? That's hardly the case. Seriously. What most are sharing are curated snapshots. I'm kind of sick of it, but that's for another day. If you find yourself feeling those yucky feeling of discouragement and the less-thans, then turn it off!

Want to know what else I'm guilty of? Letting my thoughts hang out in the past or in the future. The thing is there really isn't a whole lot I can do in the past or in the future. The only time I have complete control over is the present.

Let's spend a little less time immersed in the lives of others and more time in our present lives this year!

3| Be Friendlier:

2017 taught me that so many of us identify as lonely and/or shy. So many of us are also afraid to make the first move, so maybe this year we try to be more intentional.

If you think you may want to be friends with someone, don't wait for them to take the first step. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and take that step yourself!

I realize how this is much easier said than done.

My knees get all wobbly and I begin to sweat like a whore in church each and every time I try to strike up a conversation with anyone I don't know all that well. I think one thing that can help is to treat people as if they are already one of your best friends

When I sat down awhile ago and thought about all of the people who I wanted to be more like I realized that they all had one thing in common. They genuinely treated me as if we were already great friends. I love being around people like that and I think it's safe to say that you probably do too, so maybe this year we try it out.

4| Guard the White Space on Your Calendar:

You are in charge of how busy you are. If you have been feeling overwhelmed, take a step back, evaluate your values and how you are spending your time. Are they in line? What can you do less of?
For me, I need to incorporate more quality family time, but I also need some time for me to just be still. Spend your time the way that you should spend your money, after all, it's just as valuable.

The start of a new year is a great time to realign your focus. Let's work to reclaim the wonder and excitement of some of our earlier years. Here are 4 things you can do to help make 2018 a more magical year.

I would love to hear what your focus is for 2018.

What big projects are you hoping to tackle?

What are you trying to learn more about this year?

What changes are you hoping to make?
